‘Da 5 Bloods’, ‘Mank’ and ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Continue Their Award Season Dominination

Da 5 Bloods

Streaming services continue to dominate awards season, having racked up numerous nominations for the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and now Critics Choice Awards.

Netflix, which boasts 72 nods in total, scooped four best picture nominations, setting a record for any studio in the history of the Critics Choice Awards, with Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 representing the streamer.

Mank garnered the most nominations overall with 12 nods including best picture, director, actor for Gary Oldman and supporting actress for Amanda Seyfried.

Meanwhile, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom scored eight mentions, including yet another posthumous nomination for Chadwick Boseman who was also once again recognised for his work in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods. The late actor is the first to receive two posthumous Critics Choice nominations in the same year.

Olivia Colman is the only performer to be nominated for their work in both film and television and is up  for best actress in a drama series for The Crown and best supporting actress in The Father.

As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Critics Choice Awards will be a hybrid show featuring both virtual and in-person elements. Host Taye Diggs and some of the presenters will appear from a stage in Los Angeles with nominees appearing remotely from various locations around the world.

The Critics Choice Awards will take place on Sunday, March 7 (US time.)
