Neighbours, and the much-loved residents of Ramsay Street, will be making a return in 2023, just four months after the long-running iconic Australian soap aired its final episode.
Producers Network 10 have secured Amazon Freevee and Prime Video as their international partner, enabling a series return. Australia will still return first-broadcast rights for the show, with international viewers able to catch it on Amazon Freevee or Prime Video.
The series, which launched the careers of Russell Crowe, Kylie Minogue, Margot Robbie, Jason Donovan, and Guy Pearce, follows the lives, loves and challenges of the residents of the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborogh and had millions of adoring fans worldwide.
The show aired its bittersweet finale in July of this year after 37 years and nearly 9000 episodes due to funding issues after the UK’s Channel Five declined to renew their contract with the show.
The revival of Neighbours will see the return of iconic cast members Jackie Woodburne, Alan Fletcher, Stefan Dennis and Ryan Moloney, with further casting announcements to come.
The show’s Forest Hill studios have been a vital training ground for Australian creatives and writers in all aspects of television production.
Beverley McGarvey, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer of Paramount Australia and New Zealand said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Neighbours back home to Network 10.”
“While we loved the finale earlier this year and appreciated the incredible support from the cast, crew and fans, we continued to hold a small glimmer of hope that one day it would be possible to resume the series.”
Greg Woods, CEO of Fremantle Australia, said: “The love for Neighbours is undeniable and we have been determined to explore every possible avenue to bring it back for loyal fans across the world”.
“We will be going back into the writing room immediately and production for this wonderful series will begin next year.
“Neighbours has been so important for the Victorian production community, and along with our partners, will provide new opportunities on both sides of the camera. We cannot wait to get started.”
Production is set to commence in early 2023 with a world premiere slated for the second half of the year.
