25 Films You Won’t Believe Came Out 20 Years Ago, and Where to Watch Them

Movies that are 20

Can you believe 2001 was 20 years ago?! We can’t, and tbh it’s a little offensive that time has done this to us. We’re old!

During this lockdown, we’ve been taking a walk down memory lane, to a simpler time, a time that was not so unprecedented, you know? In our travels, we’ve found 25 films from 2001, and rounded up where you can watch them all for a hit of that sweet, sweet nostalgia.

Ali

Will Smith shines in his role as Muhummad Ali, and was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of the boxing icon. The film goes beyond Ali’s achievements in the ring and highlights his impact as a civil rights activist.

Amélie

Remember when liking Amélie was literally a whole personality? Love that for us. Still, this film goes down like pink lemonade on a summer day, and it’s worth a rewatch.

Rent it on AppleTV.

Bridget Jones’s Diary

If you haven’t had a Bridget Jones moment in your life, you’re lying. Sorry but it’s true, she’s the queen of relatability!

Watch it on Stan.

Don’t Say a Word

RIP queen Brittany Murphy! “I’ll never tell… any of you” is truly one of the most chilling and iconic lines in the history of thrillers.

Rent it on Amazon.

The Fast and the Furious

RIP Paul Walker! Can you believe the Fast franchise has been going strong for two whole decades now?

Watch it on Foxtel.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Yerr a wizard, Harry! This is where it all began… or at least, it’s where the films began, doing a magical job (haha get it) of transforming the world as it was written onto the silver screen.

Watch it on Netflix.

Heartbreakers

This film is honestly so underrated and is one of Jennifer Love Hewitt’s best roles. Fight me!

Rent it on Amazon.

I am Sam

Let’s take a moment to remember how Dakota Fanning was on all the other girlie’s necks back in the day. If there was a child in a movie, Miss Dakota was the one and only choice!

Where Macaulay Culkin was the child star of the 90s, Dakota was the child star of the 00s.

Legends only.

Rent it on AppleTV.

A Knight’s Tale

RIP Heath Ledger! Serving action, romance and comedy, Heath does it all in this film and looks great doing so.

Rent it on Amazon.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

Remember how much hooplah there was around the size of Lara Croft’s breasts in the video game versus Angelina Jolie’s in the film? 2001 was… such a time.

Watch it on Stan.

Legally Blonde

What, like it’s hard?! This film was such a moment in pop culture that its girl power legacy lives on to this day. With a threequel originally slated for release last year (no, we don’t count the straight-to-DVD Legally Blondes as canon!), Legally Blonde 3 is now set for release in May 2022, and we can’t wait.

Watch it on Stan.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Based on the J. R. R. Tolkein classic, LOTR welcomed an entire generation to the world of epic fantasy films. Impact!

Watch it on Netflix.

Monsters, Inc.

One of the Disney/Pixar greats, Monsters Inc. is as charming as it is funny, and is truly fun for the whole family.

Watch it on Disney+.

Moulin Rouge!

One of Baz Lurhmann’s most spectacular films, Moulin Rouge is a dizzying, spectacular feast for the eyes.

And of course, it gave us the 2001 version of “Lady Marmalade” with Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya and Lil Kim, and for that alone we must be forever grateful.

Watch it on Disney+.

Ocean’s Eleven

With an all-star cast, this heist movie isn’t just action-packed, it’s a ton of fun, as well.

A fun drinking game to play while watching this is to drink every time Brad Pitt is eating on camera, but be warned: you’ll get drunk!

Rent it on Amazon.

The Others

Can we be vulnerable with you for a moment? When we saw this as teens in the cinema way back in 2001, we quite literally SCREAMED at that one moment in the cupboard.

Embarrassing! Great film though! Great year for Nicole Kidman’s career.

Watch it on Stan.

The Princess Diaries

Have you ever looked in the mirror and remembered Mia’s iconic line, “as always, this is as good as it’s gonna get”? Same.

Watch it on Disney+.

Rat Race

This film has an absolutely massive cast of comedy greats, but Rowan Atkinson steals the whole film playing a narcoleptic businessman with an Italian accent so over the top it can’t even see the top anymore.

Rent it on AppleTV.

The Royal Tenenbaums

A Wes Anderson classic, this all-star cast served up family dysfunction like never before, and we absolutely ate it up.

Watch it on Disney+.

Scary Movie 2

Brenda Meeks is quite simply an icon, a legend, she is the moment! But honestly, were you even alive in 2001 if you didn’t spend the entire year saying “take my strong hand”?

Watch it on Stan.

Shallow Hal

File to: Films that would truly never be released in 2021.

Watch it on Disney+.

Shrek

Hey now, you’re an All-Star, get your game on, go play! Shrek’s an absolute classic, ‘nuff said.

Watch it on Netflix.

Training Day

One of Denzel Washington’s most iconic roles, he won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his work as a rogue detective in Training Day.

Snoop Dogg, meanwhile, won “Best Cameo” at the MTV Movie Awards for his appearance.

Watch it on Netflix.

The Wedding Planner

With Bennifer back on, let’s continue the walk down memory lane and rewatch The Wedding Planner, one of the cutest rom coms of the early 00s.

Watch it on Foxtel.

Zoolander

Blue steel, anyone? A centre for ants? They’re in the computer?! This is one of the most quotable and iconic films of the early 00s.

Rent it on AppleTV.
