2022 Is a Big Year for Movies — These Are the Films We’re Looking Forward to the Most

We’re a few weeks into 2022 and we’re looking towards the future with optimism. The last two years have been tough thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Travel had been put to a halt, loved ones were difficult to reach and lockdowns started to feel never-ending. Another big part of the conversation was movies, with so many blockbuster films having their release delayed.

Thankfully, things are starting to look up and HOYTS theatres are welcoming back movie junkies once again. Here are the movies to look forward to in 2022.

Morbius

With Jared Leto at the helm, Morbius is most definitely going to be another smash hit from Marvel Studios. The superhero film follows the story of Dr Michael Morbius, a brilliant scientist who becomes a vampire after attempting to cure himself of a rare blood disease. The action-packed movie is intended to be the third film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

Uncharted

If you couldn’t get enough of Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home then you’ll be pleased to hear about Uncharted, where he plays Nathan Drake alongside Mark Wahlberg, who plays the role of his mentor Victor Sullivan. Based on the video game of the same name, the two go on a dangerous pursuit of “the greatest treasure never found” while also discovering clues that may lead to Drake’s long-lost brother.

The Batman

After much anticipation, The Batman will be coming out in HOYTS Cinemas in 2022. A role previously played by the likes of Christian Bale and Ben Affleck, the baton is being passed on to Robert Pattinson. Featuring Zoe Kravitz, Colin Farrell and Paul Dano to name a few, The Batman is sure to please fans of the comic. Set in his second year of fighting crime, Batman attempts to uncover corruption in Gotham City while pursuing the Riddler (Dano), a serial killer who target’s the city’s elite.

Death on the Nile

Death on the Nile is an upcoming mystery thriller directed by Kenneth Branagh. Based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie, the film is a follow-up to Murder on the Orient Express and sees Branagh reprise his role of Hercule Poirot, along with Tom Bateman who was also in the first instalment. The ensemble cast includes Gal Gadot, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French and more.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

The second movie in the Dr Strange franchise is expected to release this year, with Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange. In the film, Strange casts a spell that opens the door to the multiverse, including an alternate version of Strange. Alongside Cumberbatch is Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen and Xochitl Gomez.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

So you’ve finished watching the Harry Potter reunion and now you’re experiencing withdrawals. Well good news, because Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is set to release soon. The third instalment in the Fantastic Beasts film series and the eleventh overall in the Wizarding World franchise, the story is set several years after the events of The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2

The sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog is set to release this year and is simply titled Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The story follows Sonic and Tails as they try to prevent Doctor Eggman and Knuckles the Echidna from finding Master Emerald.

Thor: Love and Thunder

It’s been a while since Thor: Ragnarok was released in cinemas and now, Thor: Love and Thunder is making its way to the big screen. While not much is known about the upcoming instalment, we do know it’s going to be a huge success.

Top Gun: Maverick

The sequel to 1986’s mega-hit Top Gun starring Tom Cruise is back, and Cruise and Val Kilmer will be reprising their roles. Maverick has devoted thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, but now, he’s forced to confront the ghosts of his past.

Jurassic World: Dominion

Jurassic Park fans it’s time to reunite! Because the sixth instalment in the franchise is set to release this year. Starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jeff Goldblum, the movie is the sequel to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Minions: The Rise of Gru

The fifth movie in the Despicable Me franchise will see Steve Carell return as Gru along with Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh and Julie Andrews. Set in the early ’70s, the movie tells the story of 12-year-old Gru and explores why he decided to become a supervillain.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

We’re going back to Wakanda but sadly, without T’Challa. The upcoming Marvel movie will be the first without the late Chadwick Boseman who passed from colon cancer in 2020.

Black Adam

Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, Black Adam is an upcoming superhero film starring Dwayne Johnson. Intended to be a spin-off from Shazam! not much is known about the movie just yet, but we’re sure it won’t disappoint.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1

Featuring the Marvel Comics character Miles Morales, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the first of a two-part sequel. Set in a shared multiverse of alternate universes called the “Spider-Verse”, the movie is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson.

Mission: Impossible 7

Yes, we’re getting the seventh Mission Impossible film in 2022 and we can hardly wait. Tom Cruise, Vanessa Kirby and Ving Rhames are just some of the returning cast members. This is another movie where not much is known about the plot, but if it’s similar to previous Mission Impossible movies then it’ll be packed with action and gravity-defying stunts.

The Flash

2022 is the year of superhero movies and DC’s The Flash is on the roster. With Ezra Miller fronting the film as The Flash, his character travels back in time to prevent his mother’s murder which brings unintended consequences.

Avatar 2

A direct sequel to the smash-hit movie Avatar, James Cameron is bringing the CGI magic back to the big screen. Cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moor, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder and Matt Gerald are all reprising their roles from the original. The movie will also feature Kate Winslet and Vin Diesel.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will see Jason Momoa reprise his role as the DC superhero. The 13th film in the DC Extended Universe is expected to release towards the end of the year and will feature Nicole Kidman and Amber Heard.
