The Met Gala, which sees a parade of the world’s biggest celebrities walk the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to open The Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, was set to occur on May 4 in 2020.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event was postponed, with a new date yet to be announced. Now, in an effort to entertain the fashion community and keep the magic of the Met Gala alive, Vogue is announcing the #MetGalaChallenge, or the “challenge to end all fashion challenges”.
The online movement invites people around the world to recreate the event’s most iconic red carpet looks in a move that “pays tribute to the night’s peacocking spirit”.
The task is fairly straightforward. You choose a look — be it Rihanna’s omelette-inspired Guo Pei gown or Kim Kardashian’s dripping Mugler dress — and do your best to emulate the ensemble with pieces you find at home.
You don your creation and upload a photo to Instagram, using the hashtag #MetGalaChallenge. Vogue and Billy Porter will then select the most creative looks to end up on the official Vogue Instagram page.
In a post to Vogue’s Instagram page, Porter says: “You have until May 3 to enter. Post with… #MetGalaChallenge. You might just find yourself in Vogue, darling.”
Interested in taking part? To help you get started, we’ve rounded up some of the more iconic and memorable looks from the Met Gala over the past few years.
Take your pick below and get creative with the hot glue gun. Good luck!
