From today, Australian homemakers will be able to purchase renewable solar energy online at IKEA. It’s a move from the Swedish furniture giant that both helps Australian homes become climate positive and simultaneously saves households close to $2,000 a year.

Named Solstråle, IKEA’s new solar offering was designed and created in collaboration with Solargain — Australia’s largest solar specialist with over 20 years’ experience in all things sustainable energy.

Jan Gardberg, CEO and chief sustainability officer at IKEA Australia, says he is proud to help Australian homes become climate positive in tandem with the Swedish furniture giant.

“Today’s launch marks an important day in the IKEA Australia organisation. We are proud have developed this offer in collaboration with our partner, and we hope that this will encourage our customers to live a more sustainable everyday life by removing the barriers to investing in renewable energy”, he said in a press release.

Keera Single, CEO of Solargain, believes teaming up with IKEA may help to bring solar energy to more Australian homes. “We wanted to work with a partner that shared our vision to help more Australians experience the benefits of renewable energy. In working with a retailer like IKEA, we believe we can reach more households that are able to make the switch to solar, which is an exciting opportunity for us to be involved in.”

A Solstråle system could cost households anywhere between $3,500 and $7,000 for a turnkey suite inclusive of all design for the roof, installation, solar panels, inverters and mounting systems. Should you wish, you could also choose to add a battery or energy storage solution.

Exact pricing will depend on local conditions, such as government incentives and rebates, plus the size of the system purchased, however, a household could expect to pay off the investment in as little as three or four years, according to IKEA’s research and estimates.

The Solstråle system also comes with a guarantee to produce at least 80% of what was quoted in a customer’s initial estimate, guaranteed for a period of five years.

The Solstråle offering is currently available to customers in Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria, but other states and territories will soon be able to purchase too.

You can visit the IKEA online store to find out more about the offering and get your free quote now. Download the Solstråle factsheet here for more information on the new systems, plus IKEA’s own efforts to become climate positive by 2030.
