Good news, witches: the trailer for Hocus Pocus 2 has landed.

It’s been close to 30 years since the Sanderson sisters first burst onto screens, and to say that the film is a Halloween staple now would honestly be underselling it. Hocus Pocus is to Halloween films what Titanic is to disaster films, what Love, Actually is to Christmas films, what The Room is to cult classic films. We could go on, but let’s not.

The long-awaited sequel has been brewing since at least 2014, when star Bette Midler said she had “canvassed the girls” and that the trio was “willing to do it”, telling fans at the time to “ask the Walt Disney company” for the sequel.

With news of the sequel eventually confirmed back in 2019, it would still be three long, COVID-ridden years before the trailer was released, but now, it’s finally here, with the film itself just three months away.

The trailer shows two friends lighting the black-flame candle, as Sam Richardson — who’s playing a magic shop owner — says “legend has it, it’s on the 16th birthday that a witch gets her powers”.

Next thing you know, the Sanderson sisters are back and better than ever, and ready to raise hell in Salem once more.

Here’s everything we know about Hocus Pocus 2.

While the original film was shot across Massachusetts and on Hollywood sets, Hocus Pocus 2 was filmed entirely in Rhode Island, the United States’ smallest state (a fun geography fact for you, dear reader!). Specifically, the film was shot around Lincoln, Providence and Newport.

Steven Feinberg, who is the executive director of the Rhode Island Film & Television Office, told NBC 10 the film chose Rhode Island because of the state’s diversity between locations that are still close in proximity to one another.

“It’s huge, it’s huge,” Feinberg said in 2021. “It’s very exciting and we’re looking forward — we talked with Disney about doing a big screening of the film when it’s completed next Halloween, not this one. Next year, we plan to have a very big Rhode Island extravaganza premiere to share with the local folks.”
