In a Surprise to No One, ‘Barbie’ and ‘Succession’ Lead Golden Globe Nominations

Golden Globe nominations 2024

The 2024 Golden Globe nominations are here, and as you’d expect, Barbie and Succession are leading the way, with nine nominations a piece in the film and television categories, respectively.

It’s been the year of Barbenheimer, so it only makes sense that Oppenheimer followed Barbie with a total of eight nominations, and Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon scored seven nods each, also.

Over in television, The Bear and Only Murders in the Building followed Succession, with each series scoring five nods.

The nominees were announced overnight by Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama, live from the Beverly Hilton, where the award ceremony will take place next month.

The Golden Globes have also introduced two new awards — one to recognise an achievement in stand-up comedy, and another to recognise success at the box office.

In order to qualify for the award in best cinematic and box office achievement, the film needs “a box office receipt total/gross of USD$150 million, of which USD$100 million must come from the U.S. domestic box office, and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership recognised by trusted industry sources,” per an announcement from the Globes earlier this year. However, if a film is released on or after November 22, it “may qualify based on projected box office performance and/or digital streaming views from trusted industry sources”. The Golden Globes voting body will then vote for the winner “based on excellence”.

Where to Watch the 2024 Golden Globes in Australia

The 81st annual Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024.

Australian viewers will be able to watch the show unfold live on Stan. In Australia, the Golden Globes will air on Monday, January 8, 2024.

Stan will air the red carpet arrivals live from 11am AEDT, with the three-hour award ceremony airing from 12pm AEDT.
