‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ Leads 2023 Golden Globe Nominations

banshees of inisherin

The 2023 Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday, December 12, and Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin is leading the way with eight nods, with the Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All At Once following with six.

Following Banshees and Everything Everywhere were Damien Chazelle’s Babylon and Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, which both scored five nods a piece.

Meanwhile, Abbott Elementary led the television nominees, picking up five nominations, including Best TV Series (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actress in a TV Series (Musical or Comedy) for show creator and lead, Quinta Brunson.

The nominees were announced by Mayan Lopez and Selenis Leyva from NBC’s Lopez vs. Lopez live from the Beverly Hilton, where the award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023 (Wednesday, Jan 11 in Australia). The 2023 Golden Globes will be hosted by Jerrod Carmichael.

In the United States, the ceremony will be aired on NBC. This marks the return of the ceremony to the network after it declined to air the 2022 ceremony in the wake of the Globes and its voting body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, being broadly criticised for having no Black members and for engaging in a number of questionable financial practices.

Since then, the HFPA has implemented a number of reforms in a bid to make its comeback in 2023, but already, the nominations have not been without controversy.

As the nominees, were announced, many people on social media were quick to call out the HFPA for snubbing female directors. This year, the nominees include James Cameron for Avatar: The Way of Water, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Baz Luhrmann for Elvis, Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisherin and Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans.

Sarah Polley has been widely considered one of the leading contenders to get an Academy Award nomination for Women Talking, and with many other female directors releasing critical hits this year — like Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King, Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun, and Chinonye Chukwu’s Till — many are taking it as a sign that the “new and improved” HFPA is much the same as it always was.
