Your Chance to Nab a Messina Mushroom Cake for $21

messina

The only thing better than a scoop of Gelato Messina is one of the brand’s extraordinary gastronomic cakes, perhaps the most famous of which is Dr. Evil’s Magic Mushroom cake.

Designed to appear like a red toadstool, the delectable dessert features dark chocolate gelato, peanut cookies, dulce de leche, flourless chocolate sponge, popping candy, a feuilletine grass base, and finished with red chocolate glaze with white chocolate dots.

Typically, the Magic Mushroom cake will set you back $95 — not exactly cheap for a cake — though it’s something every dessert person should try at least once.

Now, though, your chance to sample one of Messina’s mushroom cakes is easier than ever before. To celebrate eBay Australia‘s 21st birthday, Gelato Messina has created a special ‘birthday’ version of the Magic Mushroom Cake, and at the affordable price point of $21, with all proceeds going to Beyond Blue.

The birthday cake features a never-been-seen, limited-edition flavour profile in an 8-10 serve midi-size that eBay says “won’t take up mushroom”.

The cake features the signature red chocolate dome adorned with white chocolate spots in eBay’s brand colours. Inside, the cake boasts vanilla gelato packed with birthday cake chunks, chocolate-coated honeycomb and raspberry jam.

The stem is made from Messina’s home-made dulce de leche and vanilla gelato, on a popping candy feuilletine grass base. Yum.

“To date we’ve sold over 25,000 gelato mushrooms but this is the first time we’ve re-invented it with new flavours,” says Messina’s Declan Lee.

The eBay x Gelato Messina birthday cake is available from 10.00am on Tuesday, 15 September to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane shoppers until stocks run out. Cakes cost $21 including delivery, with all proceeds raising money for Beyond Blue.

Purchasing a cake as part of the campaign is an easy way to celebrate eBay’s milestone birthday while supporting the mental health service. Since March, monthly calls to Beyond Blue have been between 40% and 60%  higher than the same months last year.
