Nominations for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards have been unveiled and as you would expect for this year (with cinemas around the world closed, and everyone staying home), Netflix has taken a bulk of the nods, with 160 nominations under its belt — the most of any other network.
Last year, HBO had 137 nominations (helped along with Game of Thrones which is now finished).
This year, it has 107 nominations with superhero graphic novel adaptation, Watchmen, pulling the most of any series with 26 noms, while Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel swept up yet again with 20 nominations.
Netflix proved it was a force to be reckoned with, with Ozark earning 18 nominations, followed by The Crown with 13 nods, Hollywood with 12, Stranger Things with eight, Unorthodox with eight, Cheer with six and Schitt’s Creek finishing its run with six nominations.
Australian streaming service Stan is home to a number of exclusive overseas series which had great success, securing 38 nominations including for Better Call Saul, Black Monday, Godfather of Harlem, Normal People (which included breakout star Paul Mescal), Ramy, RuPaul’s Drag Race, RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked, The Great (including a nod for Australian writer Tony McNamara), Will & Grace and Wu-Tang: An American Saga.
The 72nd annual Emmy Awards will be held on September 21 2020.
