It’s been one of the tightest races of award season, and now, Emma Stone has won Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2024 Oscars for her work in Poor Things.

“My dress is broken,” she began, “I think it happened during I’m Just Ken.”

A visibly overwhelmed Stone addressed her main rival, Gladstone, saying she was “in awe of you”. “It’s been such an honour to be doing this with you and I hope we keep doing this together.”

“It’s not about me — it’s about a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts,” Stone added.

“And that is the best part about making movies. Is all of us together, and I am so deeply honoured to share this with every cast member, with every crew member, with every single person who poured their love and their care and their brilliance into the making of this film.”

Stone then thanked her parents and brother, her husband and her daughter, “who’s gonna be three in three days and has turned our world technicolour. I love you bigger than the whole sky.”

Emma Stone’s Road to the Oscar

The Best Actress race has been one of the tightest ones to watch this year, as Lily Gladstone and Emma Stone have been neck and neck all season.

At the Golden Globes, Gladstone won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, while Stone picked up Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

From there, the two split the season pretty evenly. Stone picked up the Critics Choice Award for Best Actress, Gladstone won the Screen Actors Guild Award, and Stone won the BAFTA (which Gladstone was bafflingly not nominated for).

In the end, though, it was Emma Stone’s performance that won over the Oscar voters.

This is Stone’s fourth acting nomination, and second win. Previously, she has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress twice, for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Favourite, and she won Best Actress in 2017 for her role in La La Land. Stone is also nominated as a producer for Poor Things in the Best Picture category today.
