This Very Surprising Victorian Town Topped the List of Most Popular Easter Destinations

Warragul Victoria

This year, Easter long weekend falls on Friday, April 7 to Monday, April 10. And, with the date fast approaching, many Australians have already booked their getaways. So, where are they going?

Turns out, when it comes to those travelling internationally over the Easter break, many Aussies are favouring destinations close to home, including Japan, South Korea and Tokyo. The data, collated by Expedia, is unsurprising, considering the rising cost of airfares.

Interest in accommodation in Seoul, South Korea, went up over 6000% compared to the previous year. Expedia users also were also extremely interested in accommodation in Japan, with Osaka, Tokyo, Sapporo, and Kyoto looking like popular spots over the Easter break. This is no doubt thanks to the cherry blossoms, which bloom at this time of year, and the fact that the country is now open after the pandemic.

Hong Kong and the Polynesian island Samoa also made the ‘top 10 trending international destinations over Easter’ list, as well as New Zealand’s Rotorua, Queenstown, and Wellington.

In terms of classic international travel destinations over Easter, Bali, Singapore, and Fiji were among the top spots. London, Oahu, and Phuket were also on the list.

As for domestic travel trends, the Victorian town of Warragul topped the trending Easter destination list, with accommodation interest on the booking platform Wotif up close to 115% compared with this time last year.

Tasmania’s Flinders Island, Perth, and NSW’s Yamba came next on the list. Ulladulla, Lismore, and Newcastle in NSW were also popular, as were Gladstone, Bundaberg, and Agnes Water in Queensland.

Holiday home-wise, users on Stayz were booking properties on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and South West Perth. Queensland’s Fraser Island and South Australia’s Kangaroo Island were also top hot spots.

Stayz also shared data showing that the usually popular weekend getaway destinations of the Central Coast and Hunter Valley in NSW and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria still had availability.
