What You Need to Remember Before Binging Season 2 of Netflix’s ‘Dead to Me’

Dead to Me

Spoiler alert: This article contains major plot points from Season 1 of Netflix’s Dead to Me.

Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini are back with their hit Netflix series Dead to Me.

Debuting on the streaming service on May 8, the second season jumps straight back into the action, opening where last season’s cliffhanger finale left-off.

And because it has been quite a while since we were introduced to Jen Harding (Applegate) and Judy Hale (Cardellini), we thought it best to remind you about everything that’s happened in the last season, before you settle in for a weekend of bingeing.

Obviously, there are some big spoilers ahead, so if you haven’t caught the first season — stop reading now.

☆ Where Did We Leave Off

Jen and Judy meet at a grief therapy group and seemingly bond of the loss of their partners.

Jen’s husband had been killed in a hit-and-run, but we soon learn that Judy’s fiancé Steve (James Marsden), is very much alive.

But the biggest kicker of all? Judy and Steve were the ones who hit Jen’s husband.

Judy, who feels immense guilt, tracks Jen down, befriending her and her two sons, and eventually moves into their house.

The first season also sees Jen taking matters into her own hands, trying to track down her late-husband’s killer with Judy in tow.

Riddled with guilt, Judy admits her involvement in his death and tells her friend that Steve persuaded her not to go to the police.

Then, Steve and Jen get into a heated argument and she shoots Steve with her husband’s gun, where he falls into their pool.

Judy, who was attempting to kill herself by jumping in front of a car, was stopped by a phone call from her friend.

Before the credits roll, the two are left staring at his lifeless body in the pool.

☆ Season 2 Plot

“Picking up in the aftermath of that bloody backyard reveal, the irrepressible pair once again struggle to keep their secrets buried. With a surprising new visitor in town and Detective Perez (Diana Maria Riva) hot on their heels, Jen and Judy take drastic measures to protect their loved ones and each other — no matter the cost.

“From Emmy Award-winning creator Liz Feldman, Dead to Me returns for an addictively dark second season, where the stakes are higher, the friendship is deeper and the traumas that bond loom larger than ever before.”

In an interview with USA TODAY, Applegate joked that the pair would “just shake hands and move on”.

“No. They’re not even, but it’s definitely, ‘You did this. I did this. Now we’ve got to work together.'”

Cardellini added: “There’s this idea of, ‘What is Judy going to do?’ once she realises what Jen has done. I don’t know that all can be forgiven right away. That’s a pretty powerful conflict we now have with each other. Judy is still going to feel connected to (Steve), even if he was manipulative and terrible.”
