A recent report has revealed that koalas will become extinct in New South Wales by the year 2050 if there is no immediate government intervention. Urgent action is needed to prevent further habitat loss which is the biggest threat to the survival of koalas in the state, as reported by The Guardian.
The report also noted that climate change has exacerbated the severity of bushfires and drought, which is responsible for the decimation of koala’s habitat, with an estimated 24% of koala habitat on public land affected in the recent 2019-2020 bushfires.
According to the report, up to 81% of habitat has been burnt in some areas.
