I’m a huge fan of picnics. In fact, I’ll take a picnic over a fancy long lunch any day. In between the two lockdowns in Sydney, my friends and I started to do Sunday picnics on the Grassy Knoll in North Bondi quite regularly. We’d each bring some chips, dips and other snacks.

Someone would bring a big blanket. Someone else would bring a Polaroid camera or astrology cards. And we’d sit for hours, just snacking and chatting. I absolutely loved it.

And with picnics of up to five people, who are fully vaxxed and not living in an LGA of concern, now set to be allowed in NSW from Monday, September 13, I couldn’t be more excited. Alyce Tran, co-founder of In The Roundhouse, is also a fan. “Picnics don’t have a time limit – there’s no ‘handing the table back in two hours’ so you can unwind and really D&M with all of those friends you’ve been missing,” she says.

As for the most important thing to keep in mind when styling a picnic, Tran says it’s the ease of transportation and clean-up of your styling elements. And the make or break of a picnic? “Missing mundane items like cutlery, napkins, wipes,” she says. “What can make a picnic is a fun vibe and great food.”

So, with that in mind, here are 13 things to buy that’ll instantly up your picnic game.
