The rising cost of living has hit Sydney hotel rooms. These days, Sydney hotel rooms can cost upwards of $500 a night. Fortunately, though, there are still some hotels you can check into in the city that won’t cost an arm and a leg.
Ahead, we round up some of our favourites — all with rooms for under a $300 nightly rate. From high-rise hotels in the CBD, a short stroll from from all Sydney’s major attractions, to boutique hotels in residential suburbs that’ll give you a feel of their neighbourhoods, this is our edit of the best cheap Sydney hotels.
Crystalbrook Albion, Surry Hills
Set within a heritage building, Crystalbrook Albion is a boutique hotel on Little Albion Street in Surry Hills. It features a communal rooftop where guests can bring drinks or meals, as well as a sustainable ethos in its build and operations. All of its rooms and suites are one-of-a-kind. You’ll find the Cosy room for as low as $275 on third-party sites, while the Urban room can go as low as $305 a night.
Hotel Morris, CBD
Hotel Morris first opened in 1929 and held the title of Australia’s tallest building for the next 34 years. The Haymarket hotel reopened in June 2023 as part of Accor’s Handwritten Collection group, keeping intact its Inter-War Palazzo-style architecture throughout. These days, its Bambina room and Piccolo room, both with queen beds, can be booked for $278 and $287 respectively directly through the hotel.
Hyatt Regency Sydney, CBD
Hyatt Regency Sydney on Sussex Street in the CBD is the city’s largest hotel, with 878 rooms and suites. This translates to a variety of room types, from standard with a king bed or two twin beds to the 90sqm Regency Terrace Suite, which starts at $2,799 a night. Fortunately, the standard room rates start at $299 a night, with breakfast add-on $70 a night.
Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park, CBD
As its name suggests, Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park sits across from Hyde Park with half of its rooms overlooking the park and St Mary’s Cathedral. The other half look out at the Eastern Suburbs and snaking harbour line beyond. Using a third-party site to book will get you rates as low as $309 a night.
Novotel Sydney City Centre, CBD
The Novotel Sydney City Centre opened in November 2023 with a brand concept of ‘hypothesis’ and a design ethos of not wasting space or time and letting everything flow with the guest. Booking direct will see you offered a nightly rate as low as $289 and, if you become an Accor loyalty member at no extra cost, even better: $274.
Hotel Challis, Potts Point
Steps from Macleay Street, Hotel Challis is a boutique hotel set in two, heritage-listed, but restored Victorian townhouses. Guests can take advantage of its Parisian-styled communal garden, lounge and terrace. Rooms have views of Woolloomooloo Wharf and the Royal Botanic Gardens, or, on the other side, Sydney Harbour and the Opera House. The twin deluxe room starts at $174 a night, while the premium king balcony is an affordable $279, both rates directly through the hotel.
Hotel Ravesis, Bondi
If waking to the scent of the sea sounds like your style, opt to book at Hotel Ravesis. While the bar and restaurant by the same name downstairs is popular, its upstairs accommodation is lesser-known. The hotel houses 12 individually-styled rooms spread across two floors – some with side views of the ocean, others with beachfront. Book a side room view on a third-party site for as low as $250 a night.
The Woolstore 1888 by Ovolo, Pyrmont
The Woolstore 1888 is set in a woolstore built in 1888. Though it retains its rich history in its décor, it also adopts the playfulness the Ovolo hotel brand is known for, including daily social hour, a complimentary candy station, and access to a local fitness centre. Book its Shoebox room for as low as $215 a night, though its King Deluxe will still only set you back an affordable $278 and its Loft, $305.
