Hobart is an essential stop on any Tasmania trip. In addition to Hobart’s top-notch restaurants, which include The Agrarian Kitchen where all the veggies and herbs you eat were grown in its garden, the city also has the Salamanca Markets, MONA and Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery to explore.

One of the only downsides to a stay in Hobart? The room rates. In the last decade or so, the city has grown in popularity among domestic and international tourists. Alongside that, it’s welcomed a string of high-end hotels, many with rooms starting at $500 a night.

Fortunately, the city also has some luxe-feel hotels for under $250 a night. Ahead, we’re rounding up some of the best among them. From a hotel with a complimentary chocolate-sampling hour, to a spot with a rooftop bar using Mount Wellington as its backdrop, these are some of the best affordable places to stay in Hobart.

Crowne Plaza Hobart

The highlight of Crowne Plaza Hobart is, easily, its rooftop bar The Deck, where you can see Mount Wellington in the distance. The hotel also has a fitness centre and a restaurant called Core, serving a seasonal menu, featuring Tasmanian produce. When you’re ready to explore the city, you’ll find yourself steps from cafés, restaurants and shopping boutiques. Rooms start at $249 a night.

Movenpick Hotel Hobart

Swiss-born Movenpick Hotel brand chose Hobart for its first Australian location, opening Movenpick Hotel Hobart in January 2021. The hotel’s 221 rooms are decorated in a colour scheme reflecting the state’s natural landscapes. Its highlight is its daily complimentary chocolate hour, where guests can mingle and sample sweet treats in the lobby.

Wrest Point

Guests at Wrest Point Hotel Casino can enjoy views of the River Derwent, Mount Wellington and Hobart’s CBD. The hotel has an indoor heated pool, fitness centre and sauna, as well as on-site Point Revolving Restaurant serving modern Australian with French influences and The Birdcage Bar offering live music and cocktails. Rooms start at $219. 

The Macquarie Hobart

A five-minute walk from Hobart’s waterfront and 10 minutes from Salamanca Market, The Macquarie Hobart is housed in a heritage building erected in 1875. It retains the original structure’s high ceilings, period furnishings and timber staircase. Rooms range from solo traveller, to queen heritage, with a queen bed and two-seat sofa.

Ibis Styles Hobart

The Ibis Styles Hobart opened in 2017. Guests can take advantage of its fitness centre, heated indoor pool and Asian street-food concept restaurant, Mr Good Guy. The hotel is conveniently a 10-minute stroll from Salamanca Market and 11 minutes from Peacock Theatre. Play around with your dates and find rates as low as $261 a night.

Vibe Hotel Hobart

Rooms at the Vibe Hotel Hobart were inspired by the sandstone cliffs of Bruny Island. They also feature Tasmanian oak furnishings, handcrafted by local artisans. After exploring Hobart, splash around in the hotel’s indoor plunge pool before drying off and heading to dinner at its restaurant Belvedere. The hotel also have a gym. Rooms start at $229 a night. 

Alabama Hotel Hobart

Alabama Hotel Hobart is a boutique hotel that feels like an eclectic home, with mismatched furniture and assorted art hanging on the walls. The hotel is ideally located, a 3-minute walk from Hobart’s waterfront, where you can catch the ferry to MONA. Rooms start at a bargain $126 a night, but you will need to share a bathroom with other guests – there are no en-suites.

Best Western Hobart

Though built in 1976, Best Western Hobart was refurbished in 2019. It has 140 rooms across six floors, many of them equipped with balconies looking out at the city skyline, Mount Wellington or Derwent River. The hotel’s restaurant Embers Bar-Pizza-Grill is open seven days a week. Rooms start at $121 a night with breakfast included.

Riverfront Motel and Villas

As its name suggests, Riverfront Motel and Villas is located directly in front of a river, Derwent River, to be exact. It features a solar-heated, outdoor pool, a kids’ playground and a half-size tennis court. One-bedroom villas with a full kitchen, living area with sofa and TV and a dining area start at $219 a night.
