50% of Australians have officially had their first Covid jab, and we’re bloody proud. If this isn’t a reason to devour some cake, we don’t know what is.
Melbourne cake business Beurre, run by pastry queen Zahara Valibhoy, are making these super cute Covid-defiant cakes, to encourage more people to get the jab and reward those that have already done so.
We love a decorated cake moment at the best of times, especially when they come with the phrases “Great jab!” “Yay, science.” “Congrats on your vax!” and “Poppin’ buttons for Sutton” (a tongue-in-cheek reference to Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton), iced on top.
The one-woman show behind these masterpieces, is Zahara Valibhoy, a Melbourne-based chef with a passion for patisserie. From working in marketing for a automotive company, she decided to follow her passions with a four-year apprenticeship in Melbourne and a stint working at beloved macaron store Ladurée in Paris.
With lockdown #6 looming over Melbourne-town right now, not to mention the political shambles that is the rest of the world right now, let’s just say it’s pretty friggin nice to get some delicious and encouraging news.
“There’s only so many political posts you can put on your [Instagram] story, so instead I wanted to do something fun,” Valibhoy says, in an article on Broadsheet. “It’s been really nice seeing people congratulate each other on getting vaccinated – not just with the cakes, but in general.”
These fab new Covid-inspired creations are oval-shaped, with beautifully kitsch decorations. You can choose from: chocolate sponge with milk-chocolate Chantilly and berry gel; vanilla-plum sponge with whipped cream cheese and cheesecake crumble; and pecan sponge with Biscoff Chantilly and pecan praline.
We all know that the vaccination makes you 10% hotter, but now, it also makes you eligible for an entire cake to yourself.
How to order: You can order via email by Thursday for delivery on Saturday. The cakes are $45 each and delivery is free within 10km of Balwyn or $10 beyond that.
