BBC Earth Experience, an immersive exhibit with narration by Sir David Attenborough, is headed to Melbourne. The experience premiered in London and is currently on until January 2024, and announced this week, will also be on in Melbourne from this October.
The experience will be hosted by the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and will feature footage from the BBC Studios Natural History series ‘Seven Worlds, One Planet’. It’s the result of a collaboration with Visit Victoria, BBC Studios, Moon Eye Productions, Intrepid and Live Nation.
Luke Hede, Live Nation Australia Vice President of Touring, says the exhibit will deliver a spectacular and educational experience unlike any other.
“Sir David Attenborough is a global treasure, and the BBC Earth Experience marries his message about the challenges nature faces in today’s world alongside the world’s most incredible footage,” says Hede. “Victorians and visitors to the state are in for a real treat.”
Using the latest digital projection technology, visitors will take an audio-visual journey through the world’s seven contents, brought to life by the BBC’s natural history footage and Attenborough.
Walking through the exhibit, you’ll see incredible nature sights like fireflies putting on a light show in North America, snub-nosed monkeys huddling together to stay warm in Asia and cassowary fathers protecting their tiny chicks in Australia.
“The experience has made me think about the planet in a different way,” one visitor to the London exhibit wrote. “It was jaw-dropping,” said another.
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos, says nowhere does epic events like Melbourne does, describing the experience as inspiring, with its narration by master storyteller, Attenborough.
“Melbourne is the only city in Australia that will host the incredible BBC Earth Experience, which will attract thousands of visitors to enjoy everything on offer in our city while supporting jobs across the tourism and events sectors,” says Dimopoulos.
This isn’t the first highly anticipated immersive exhibit to open in Melbourne this year. The Lume Melbourne’s exhibit Connection opened in June. Two years in the making, it showcases the works of some of Australia’s best First Nations artists.
With 110 visual and musical artists featured, it’s the largest representation of First Peoples arts and culture ever assembled. The exhibit spans 3,000 square meters with projections up to four storeys high to help visitors feel like they are stepping into the works. It’s set to a score of First Nations music with a soundtrack comprising legends including Yothu Yindi, Archie Roach, Emily Wurramara and Gurrumul.
BBC Earth Experience will open in Melbourne at Melbourne Exhibition Centre on Friday, October 27. Tickets go on sale Thursday, September 7 at 1pm.
