After much success in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the US and Australia’s Brisbane and Adelaide, a hugely popular Banksy exhibition will be coming to Sydney in January 2024. “The Art of Banksy: Without Limits” has been visited by over 1.5 million visitors worldwide.
The exhibition features over 150 artworks from the secretive UK street artist. They include prints, photos, lithographs, sculptures, murals and video mapping installations specially created for the tour. Visitors can appreciate them in custom-built experiential areas.
“[…] We’re certain that Sydneysiders will relish in Banksy’s ability to provoke, shock and even disturb society – all of which he does with humour and poetry,” says Kemal Gurkaynak, Managing Director of Muse Marketing and Entertainment.
Exhibition highlights include ‘Dismaland’ installations from Banksy’s 2015 pop-up Bemusement Park, prints of ‘Flower Thrower’ and ‘Kissing Coopers’ and the sculpture ‘Phone Booth’. It also features a section dedicated to Banksy’s activism related to immigrants, as well as an immersive ‘infinity room’ addressing politics.
Visitors will be invited to join the spirit of Banksy’s activism by spray painting their own T-shirt with a $2 donation to the M.V. Louise Michel organisation.
“Banksy’s work unites people with ideas and values that can change the world for the better, and through ‘The Art of Banksy: Without Limits’, our mission is to present the truth about his art and to carry his powerful message into the world.”
Banksy’s real name has never been revealed publicly, though in a 2003 BBC interview, he was asked if he’s called ‘Robert Banks’. He replied: “It’s Robbie”. In the interview, Banksy also compared his approach to art, which involves producing graffiti undercover at speed, to microwaving meals. “It’s quick,” he said. “I want to get it done and dusted.”
Banksy’s best-known image is ‘Girl With Balloon’, which features a young girl with her hand extended toward a red heart-shaped balloon carried away by the wind. The piece was originally stencilled on a wall in east London in 2002 and has been endlessly reproduced.
“The Art of Banksy: Without Limits” will be held at Sydney’s Town Hall and will be presented by entertainment discovery platform Fever. It’s recommended you plan to spend about 45 to 60 minutes. You can join the waitlist for tickets here.
