One of the biggest celebrations in the country is Australia Day. And while you (and us, too) likely have some thoughts on whether we should be celebrating on the day, the fact is that the day is still considered a public holiday and celebrations in the form of parades and fireworks in capital cities are still taking place.
And among those capital cities’ festivities, Melbourne has some of the best on offer, including ceremonies, parades, live entertainment, fireworks and, of course, home barbecues and pool parties, not to mention beach parties.
While most of the official events have yet to be confirmed, though organisers are saying that, at this stage, things will be going ahead, there are a few things about the day we do know. There’s the date, of course.
This year, Australia Day falls mid-week, on Wednesday, January 26, meaning that if you take off the Monday and Tuesday before or the Thursday and Friday after, you’ll get a cruisrey five days off for the price of two. Or, if you’re really feeling like spoiling yourself, consider taking off both the days before and after, with four days off giving you a whopping nine in a row.
Traditional events are likely to be held in Federation Square on the day, as was the case in previous years. Festivities are also expected to be happening over in Melbourne Docklands.
In previous years, they’ve had roaming artists, live entertainment and plenty of food and drink were available from 6pm so we’re guessing that’ll be again the case this year. Also in previous years, fireworks in the Docklands kicked off at 9pm, so, if all goes to plan, the evening should play out similarly.
And, if you aren’t keen on heading to Docklands to catch the fireworks, you’ll also be able to see them from Victoria Harbour, aboard an Aquadonut, which you can rent on the night.
Transport-wise, if you’re wanting to get into the city for Australia Day, particularly in the evening, it’s advised you take public transport as there will likely be a number of road closures including parts of St. Kilda Road, Flinders Street and Swanston Street.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated as the events — official and non-official — on Australia Day in Melbourne are confirmed.
