If you have yet to taste Aldi wine, what are you waiting for? And sure, if you’re in a lockdown area, then OK, fine, I understand you might not be willing to head to an Aldi. But if you’re not in lockdown, then run — don’t walk. But only once you’ve finished reading this.

So, why the reminder to taste Aldi’s wine? Well, while the German discount supermarket is already known for its quality drops, it’s been recognised yet again for one of its bottles.

This time, with its South Point Estate Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir NV, which won double gold at the Melbourne International Wine Competition. Described on Aldi’s website as a classic blend of chardonnay and pinot noir, ‘fresh and full flavour’, it’ll set you back a mere $4.99.

Also taking home double gold in the competition were its bottles of Bordeaux Les Maurins Sauvignon Blanc 2020 ($6.99) and Villa Elsa Pinot Grigio 2020 ($6.99).

As for the wines that won gold, they were:

  • Blackstone Paddock Shiraz 2019, $17.99
  • El Toro Macho Reserva 2016, $8.99
  • One Road Cabernet Merlot 2019, $7.49
  • Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut NV, $22.99

Villa Elsa won for Italy’s Pinot Grigio Winery of the Year, while Monsigny won Brut Champagne of the Year and Les Maurins for Sauvignon Blanc Winery of the Year.

“We are thrilled that our award-winning wines have been recognised yet again among the highest drops available in Australia,” says Jason Bowyer, wine buying director at Aldi Australia.

“Produced locally and abroad by our network of loyal partners, these awards are a testament to their hard work and dedication. We share the same goal in offering a collection of diverse wines so our Aussie customers can enjoy top shelf quality wine at amazing prices.”

We know what we’ll be sipping our next celebration (or just regular Saturday night in lockdown).
