I remember the exact moment I spotted my family dog Anna at the pound. We’d taken another dog around the building for a walk and were letting it back into its cage when I saw her, sitting calmly in a basket at the back of the same cage.
We asked if we could take her for a walk, too, fell in love with her and ended up adopting her. Many of my childhood memories feature Anna, a beautiful cocker spaniel and golden retriever mix. I feel so lucky to not only have grown up with a family pet, but also to have provided one who’d been homeless with such a loving home.
If that’s something you’d like to experience, too, and you live in Sydney, consider adopting a cat of dog from Sydney Dogs & Cats Home. The charity pound provides shelter, food and veterinary care to lost, homeless and abandoned animals, in association with the local councils of Sydney.
Currently, the shelter has the below cats and dogs up for adoption. Note, of course, that the list changes daily and that adoptions can happen within hours.
And if you do wind up adopting, you might want to consider whether getting pet insurance is right for you. Budget Direct offers Pet Insurance with 15% off your first year’s premium when you buy online (T&Cs apply). Find out what they cover and if it’s right for you by heading to their website.
List last updated on October 5.
Harriet
American staffy terrior Harriet isn’t a big fan of city life and would much prefer a spacious area. She loves a cuddle and has some basic manners. More info on Harriet here.
Bill
Two-year-old male staffy Bill is described as being an affectionate pup who is confident when meeting new people. Bill is clever and responsive to training, and loves his walks. More info on Bill here.
Owen
Two-year-old Owen is more of an observer than a participator in activities. He’s quiet and sweet, and looking for a home with calm and patient owners. More info on Owen here.
Velvet
Velvet is the king of relaxation. In fact, he spends most of his day either relaxing or trying out different sleeping spots. As he’s not a fan of too much activity and loud noises, he’d best suit to a home with no young children. More info on Velvet here.
