Julia Louis-Dreyfus is reuniting with filmmaker Nicole Holofcener for upcoming dramedy You Hurt My Feelings, centred around a married couple who have reached a standstill in their personal and professional relationship.
You Hurt My Feelings was featured during the 2023 Sundance film festival, with the film itself slated for release in cinemas in late May.
The film follows Beth (Louis-Dreyfus), an author who is working on her latest book. As she works through the struggles of the writing process, Beth overhears her biggest cheerleader, husband Don (Tobias Menzies), say that he’s not a fan of her latest work.
Heartbroken and betrayed, Beth grapples with how to proceed forward after hearing Don’s real thoughts after years of his overall support. The film follows the journey of the couple trying to get their marriage back on track as well as separately working through new stages of their careers.
Exploring the little white lies we tell our loved ones in a bid to protect their feelings, You Hurt My Feelings has been described as warm, funny, and delightful, achieving a 96% scoring on Rotten Tomatoes after its premiere at Sundance.
The film also stars Michaela Watkins, Arian Moayed, Owen Teague, and Jeannie Berlin, all playing various family members of Louis-Dreyfus’ Beth.
Louis-Dreyfus and filmmaker Holofcener previously worked together on 2013’s Enough Said, another romantic dramedy following a divorced woman becoming entangled in new relationship drama. The film received favourable reviews, with Holofcener praised for her sharp wit and gift for portraying life with as much realism as possible on the big screen, something that will undoubtedly carry over in the latest chapter of Holofcener and Louis-Dreyfus’ working relationship.
You Hurt My Feelings is due for release on May 26. Watch the trailer below:
