In 1988, Eddie Murphy starred in Coming to America — a film which was a world away from Beverley Hills Cop, cementing his star power and earning him a cult following.
The story centred around Prince Akeem (Murphy), an extremely pampered African Prince who travels to Queens, New York, on his 21st birthday after summoning up the courage to reject an arranged marriage proposal.
In the search for the true love of his life, the Prince goes undercover to find a wife that he can respect for her intelligence and will — resulting in one of the best comedies of the ’80s.
Now, Akeem (and Murphy) is back some 33 years later in a sequel to the hit movie, Coming 2 America.
Launching worldwide on Amazon Prime Video on March 5, 2021, the film will follow on from the original.
Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York – where it all began.
The new plot follows Prince Akeem as he is set to become King of Zamunda, discovering a son he never knew about in America. Akeem and Semmi return to America to honour the King’s dying wish to groom this son as the crowned prince.
Original cast favourites from Coming to America return including King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), Queen Lisa (Shari Headley), Cleo McDowell (John Amos), Maurice (Louie Anderson) and the motley barbershop crew. Joining this star-studded ensemble are Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Jermaine Fowler, Bella Murphy, Rotimi, KiKi Layne, Nomzamo Mbatha and Teyana Taylor, making Coming 2 America the most anticipated comedy film of the year.
Since the ’80s flick, Murphy has starred in Mulan, Doctor Dolittle, Shrek, The Nutty Professor, Daddy Daycare and Dolemite is My Name and has also starred in several of his own comedy specials.
Coming 2 America will launch worldwide on March 5, 2021.
