Tim Burton‘s television debut is just around the corner, and from the looks of the trailer, it’s going to be everything you’d expect from an eight-hour Tim Burton adventure.

Hot off the heels of Scream and A24’s X, Jenna Ortega‘s star continues to rise as she takes on the titular role of Wednesday Addams.

The new trailer shows her wreaking havoc on her classmates, setting live piranhas free in the school swimming pool to punish her brother Pugsley’s bullies.

She gets expelled, and thus, is shipped off to Nevermore Academy. From there, we’ll follow her mysterious adventures throughout the series.

As the first live-action iteration of Wednesday Addams since Christina Ricci in the ’90s films, Ortega has big shoes to fill, something she was acutely aware of when Ricci was announced to be joining the cast alongside her.

“I felt like I was genuinely having a panic attack when I was told,” Ortega told Empire recently. “I was terrified. She’s a really cool lady. I was fine meeting her, but the first time we did a scene together and she had to see me done up the way she was done up 30 years ago, it was nerve-racking.”

She continued: “It’s really important to me that I wasn’t ripping anyone off. Christina Ricci’s performance is flawlessly done. It’s pitch-perfect and I wouldn’t change anything about it, which is another reason it was hard for me to do this job.”

Thankfully, Ricci — whose role has been kept under wraps thus far — offered Ortega her blessing.

“It’s super fun,” Ricci said of the series recently during a Yellowjackets FYC event. “I loved working with Tim [Burton]. I worked with Gwendolyn Christie, it was amazing. And Jenna is incredible.”

“I saw some of the wardrobe photos before I went [to set] so I knew [what she looked like in character] and I was like, it’s such a great modern take on Wednesday,” Ricci continued. “It’s so true tonally to the heart and soul of [the original], but it’s then it’s incredibly modern and it’s great.”

What Is Wednesday About?

The series follows Wednesday Addams’ years as a student, when she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents.

Is Wednesday a Reboot of The Addams Family Movies?

Wednesday is not a reboot of the Barry Sonnenfeld films of the ’90s, nor of the ’60s sitcom. Rather, showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough told Vanity Fair recently that they wanted to honour to the previous iterations of The Addams Family, while making Wednesday into “its own thing” as a standalone series. They said:

“That’s something that was very important to the show—that it didn’t feel like a remake or a reboot. It’s something that lives within the Venn diagram of what happened before, but it’s its own thing. It’s not trying to be the movies or the ’60s TV show. That was very important to us and very important to Tim [Burton].”
