‘The Umbrella Academy’ Has Been Renewed for Season 3 — Here’s What We Know

The Umbrella Academy

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for season two of The Umbrella Academy.

There’s a lot to love about Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. Superheroes, the epic soundtrack, the stunning costumes and the quirky characters.

And now, after two incredibly popular and successful seasons, a third one is officially underway.

Announced by Netflix on November 11, season three — which will be made up of ten episodes — will begin production in February 2021.

“Oh my god! We’re back! Again! It’s official. Production for S3 of The Umbrella Academy begins in February,” a caption read accompanying a post on the official Instagram of the series.

Reprising their roles for the third instalment is Ellen Page as Vanya, Tom Hopper as Luther, David Castañeda as Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, Aidan Gallagher as Number Five, Justin H. Min as Ben, Ritu Arya as season two newcomer Lily, and Colm Feore as Reginald Hargreeves.

The Umbrella Academy‘s second season took place largely in 1963 on Sissy’s (Marin Ireland) farm where Vanya ended up after the events of season one.

When Sissy’s son Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly) drowns, Vanya revives him simultaneously giving him some of her powers.

We also meet Lila, who turns out to be The Handler’s daughter (Kate Walsh) — who, gasp, is alive after being shot in the head in season one. Lila is ready to destroy the Hargreeve’s kids, after learning that Number Five killed her parents in the past — but when he was adult Five. Keeping up?

Luther and Diego also come face-to-face with their father and mother — which is important for the upcoming season.

It also turns out that Lila too has powers and is able to mirror those of each Umbrella Academy members as she was also born on October 1, 1989. The same day as the others.

As for Klaus, he has become a spiritual leader, using modern-day songs as gospel. He is still the only one who can see Ben — and this also becomes a pivotal plot-point, before Ben seemingly dies for good.

At the end of the season, the Umbrella Academy kids time travel once again and land in April 2, 2019, the day after the apocalypse, and their family mansion is still standing. When they turn up, Reginald Hargreeves a.k.a their father is alive and well. The events of the world have been altered.

“I knew you’d show up eventually,” he says to them, suggesting he remembers the events of 1963.

Most importantly, the Umbrella Academy doesn’t exist in this new universe. Reginald is now the head of the Sparrow Academy and his son, Ben, is alive and has no recollection of his siblings.

It seems that all of that messing around with time in the previous season has altered the future and it’s a whole new world. What will become of the Umbrella Academy? We’ll just have to wait until season three premieres towards the end of 2021.
