Whether you are familiar with the Sweet Tooth DC comic book series or not, you are bound to love the whimsy of the screen adaptation on Netflix.
For starters, the project is brought to us by none other than Iron Man himself — Robert Downey Jr. — who teamed up with his wife Susan through their production company to bring the post-apocalyptic graphic novels to life.
Sweet Tooth was originally created by writer and artist Jeff Lemire and explores a universe in which a catastrophic event has decimated the Earth’s population and had a rather curious effect on remaining mankind by way of babies being born as anthropomorphic —that is, hybrids of human and animal.
The story follows a young deer-boy named Gus (Christian Convery), who joins forces with a small group of other human-animal hybrids and wanderers (including Game of Thrones’ Nonso Anozie) to journey through the new world in an effort to discover exactly how they came to be. Given that there are many who see Gus’ kind as a threat, there is danger at every turn as the group try to evade capture and figure out what happened to the planet.
The series is produced by Jim Mickle (We Are What We Are) who said in a statement, “We wanted to make a show that offers escape and adventure, where nature is reclaiming the world and in many ways, it feels like a fairytale.
“Sweet Tooth is a new kind of dystopian story, it’s very lush and hopeful. We want people to come into this world where there’s beauty and hope and adventure. This is a sweeping story — we ride on trains, climb mountaintops, run through forests. This is a show about what makes a family, what home really means, and why it’s important to keep faith in humanity.”
In addition to Convery and Anozie, Sweet Tooth also stars Will Forte (Last Man on Earth, Saturday Night Live), Adeel Akhtar (Murdered by My Father), Aliza Vellani (Upload), Stefania LaVie Owen (Krampus), Dania Ramirez (Once Upon a Time), Neil Sandilands (The Flash), and Thanos aka James Brolin as the series’ narrator.
Sweet Tooth premieres on Netflix on June 4.
