Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to Debut on Disney+ on May 4

Since its arrival in November 2019, Disney + has delighted fans young and old with its ever-growing collection of nostalgic TV and movies.

While we’ve loved watching our favourite cartoon classics and High School Musical reruns (anyone else trying to nail that dance?) during our time in isolation, the addition of Marvel and Star Wars films have no doubt been a source of excitement for many.

Now, Disney+ have announced that they will begin streaming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker two months earlier than they originally planned.

And on what day? May the fourth of course!

The final instalment of the original film franchise will complete a set of George Lucas’s nine-film Skywalker series, which can all be viewed on the streaming platform.

The film stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong’o, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, with Ian McDiarmid and Billy Dee Williams.

In addition to new content offerings, Disney+ will also honour the artistry of Star Wars with a week-long concept art takeover on the service.

Like a commemorative gallery, each film and series’ artwork will be updated on May 4th to feature its original concept paintings. From Star Wars: A New Hope to The Mandalorian, the updated art will feature work from celebrated artists such as the legendary Ralph McQuarrie and Academy Award-winning artist, author, and production designer, Doug Chiang.

Earlier in April, Disney + also announced a very exciting addition to their content for fans of a galaxy far, far away — in the form of a documentary series called Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian.

Jon Favreau (who, by the way, is excellent in the film Chef) served as producer of the series and will host a roundtable conversation, interviews, and never-before-seen footage about the franchise newest offering, The Mandalorian.

The series centres around a lone gunfighter who makes his way through the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic — and if you only signed up to Disney + just to catch a glimpse of this release, then this news is sure to please you.

Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian is an opportunity for fans of the show to take a look inside and get to see a different perspective, and perhaps a greater understanding, of how The Mandalorian came together and some of the incredibly talented contributors throughout season 1,” Favreau said in a statement.

“We had a great experience making the show and we’re looking forward to sharing it with you.”

Included in the series will be topics about filmmaking, acting as well as the “groundbreaking technology” that was used to create a whole new world. The Star Wars kind, not the Aladdin one.

While there’s no word on the official release date for Australia just yet, the US can bet on a very apt date to watch the show. May the 4th… dah!
