At one point in our lives, we have all experienced young love.
Whether it was heartache from the breakdown of a serious relationship or if we loved someone deeply from afar, nothing broke like a teenage heart.
In Sally Rooney’s novel, Normal People (following the successful Conversations With Friends), we bear witness to a modern love story about how two people can profoundly impact each other’s lives.
The novel won critical acclaim with 2019’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and entered the New York Times Bestseller list at #3.
Now, the novel has been turned into a TV Series which you can stream exclusively on Stan from April 27.
A teenage love story, we see the pair weave in and out of each other’s lives as they explore just how complicated intimacy and young love can be.
Before we hit our couches to watch it all in a single sitting, here’s everything you need to know about the new series.
What Is Normal People About?
“Normal People tracks the tender but complicated relationship of Marianne and Connell from the end of their school days in small-town West of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College, Dublin. At school, he’s well-liked and popular, while she’s lonely, proud and intimidating. A strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers – one they are determined to conceal. A year later, they’re both studying in Dublin and Marianne has found her feet in a new social world, but Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain,” the official synopsis reads.
Who is in the cast?
The series stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Cold Feet) as Marianne and newcomer Paul Mescal as Connell — the lovers in the story.
Joining them are Sarah Greene (Dublin Murders) as Lorraine, Aislín McGuckin (Outlander) as Denise alongside India Mullen (Into the Badlands) as Peggy and a whole host of new and up-and-coming Irish and English actors.
Will Sally Rooney be Involved in the Series?
Normal People wouldn’t be Normal People without Rooney abd the author has adapted the book for the small screen (alongside Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe) and serves as an executive producer.
“As a longtime admirer of Lenny Abrahamson’s work, it’s a special privilege for me to be working alongside him on the adaptation of Normal People,” she said in a statement.
“I couldn’t be happier with the cast and team we’ve put together, and I’m very excited to watch them bringing new life to the story on screen.”
How Can We Watch It in Australia?
Every episode of Normal People will be available only on Stan from 27 April — same day as the U.K. — so, that’s Monday night sorted.
