Welcome to The Latch Tastemakers, where we sit down with people who know a city’s scene like the back of their hand to ask their must-try restaurants, cafes and bars. Dive into our Tastemakers series and curate your ultimate hit-list, whether you’re exploring your own city or venturing somewhere new.

Nedd Brockman has been one of Australia’s most recognisable faces since running 4,000km across the country in 47 days in 2022. While you might think someone who pushed himself to such extremes would only be focused on protein shakes and kale, turns out Brockmann, now a Destination NSW ambassador, has a surprising passion for Sydney’s dining scene.

“There are so many good restaurants that they have to be at a certain standard to keep up with the competition,” he says. “They’re in amazing spots; easily accessible locations. You can’t go wrong with Sydney dining.”

Here, Brockman shares his top Sydney eats, including his go-to spots for a schnitzel sandwich and his favourite steak houses.

Bistecca

Brockmann says he’s lost count of how many times he’s been to Italian restaurant Bistecca in the CBD. From the same owners as Grandma’s and The Wild Rover, the Italian restaurant focuses on Tuscany’s famed cut of steak, Bistecca alla Fiorentina. “I’m a sucker for Bistecca,” Brockmann says. “It’s one of my absolute favourites.”

Luc-San

Another top pick is Luc-San in Potts Point, helmed by chef Luke Mangan. Opened in 2023, the restaurant’s a fusion of French and Japanese cuisines, inspired by Mangan’s classical French training and time working in Tokyo at his restaurant Salt. “I order the steak,” says Brockmann. “It’s beautiful.”

Pina

When it comes to cafes, Brockmann has a soft spot for Pina in Potts Point, located opposite Room Ten in Llankelly Place. His go-to order? Scrambled eggs with all the fixings. “I just go nuts,” he says. “It’s usually after a long run, so it’s no holding back, just going nuts.”

S’wich

A self-proclaimed “sucker” for sandwich shops, Brockmann raves about S’wich on Glenayr Avenue in Bondi. His preferred order is the S’wich Schnit, a hearty creation packed with schnitzel, white cabbage, and peanut chili crack, to which he adds cheese and avocado. His verdict? “God, it’s good,” he says.

South Dowling Sandwiches

Another cherished Sydney sandwich spot is South Dowling Sandwiches, with locations in Darlinghurst, Alexandria, and the CBD. Brockmann’s usual order is The Brad Pitt, a generously filled sandwich featuring schnitzel, potato and grilled zucchini. “It’s just got everything on it,” he says. “It’s unreal.”

Cut Lunch Deli

Brockmann also counts Cut Lunch Deli in Randwick among his favorites. The deli offers around seven sandwich options, each on a different type of bread. “They’re legends there and amazing schnitz sandwich as well,” he says.

Epicurean at Crown

While Brockmann doesn’t do fine dining often, when he does indulge, he heads to Epicurean at Crown. This all-you-can-eat, all-day buffet has dishes from around the world, prepared in open kitchens. “If I do get the chance and after a long run, Epicurean at the Crown is the most elite buffet breakfast known to man,” he says.
