‘Wandavision’ Sweeps the 2021 MTV Movie and TV Awards

The winners of the MTV Movie and TV Awards were announced on May 16, 2021, in an event that was broadcast from the Palladium in Los Angeles and hosted by Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones.

The award show was held as a hybrid event with both in-person and virtual attendees cheering on their favourite performers, films, TV shows and moments.

Disney+ and Marvel’s Wandavision was the big winner of the night, with the series receiving four awards including best series and best performance in a TV show for Elizabeth Olsen.

The late Chadwick Boseman posthumously won best performance in a movie for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, after missing out at the 93rd Oscars to Anthony Hopkins. The award was accepted by actress Yara Shahidi on his behalf, as the audience erupted into a standing ovation for the actor.

Pose star Billy Porter was the one to present Scarlett Johansson with the Generation Award, with the Black Widow lead accepting the nod via video. Johansson thanked the “many hundreds of creative people all over the world” and “the fans for riding the wave with me and supporting my career so I have the good fortune to continue to pursue the job that is my passion,” for the recognition, before having green slime poured on her by husband Colin Jost. The SNL Weekend Update anchor said he had confused the MTV Awards for the Nickelodeon Kids Choice event.

And it was Seth Rogen who did the honours for Sacha Baron Cohen, who was the recipient of the Comedic Genius Award. Cohen hired Rogen as a writer for Da Ali G show when he was just 22-years-old, giving him his big break into comedy.
