Oscars 2020: Laura Dern Wins Oscar Rounding Out Successful Awards Season

Laura Dern

Laura Dern has won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her turn as Nora Fanshow in Netflix’ Marriage Story at the 92 Annual Academy Awards.

The actor has had an incredibly successful awards season, taking home every award she was nominated for, including the Golden Globe, the Screen Actors Guild Award, the Critics Choice Award and the BAFTA. Her brand new Oscar, an impressive number eight.

In her speech, Dern thanked the Academy “for this honour” and referred to her fellow nominees as “remarkable artists” and “my sisters and colleagues”.

Dern then thanked the cast and crew of  Marriage Story, paying homage to Noah Baumbach who “wrote a movie about love and about breaching divisions in the name and in the honour of family and home and hopefully for all of us in the name of our planet.”

Dern then rounded out her speech by saying:

“Some say never meet your heroes, but I say if you are really blessed, you have them as your parents. I share them with my legends, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. You got game, I love you always for this gift, this is the best birthday present ever. I love you, I love my friends, you lift me up every day. Thank you.”

Dern’s mum, Ladd, accompanied her daughter on the red carpet.

While bringing your mum is special in itself, the occasion was made even more poignant by the fact that it marked 45 years since the mother-and-daughter duo first walked the Oscars red carpet together.

In 1974, Ladd was nominated in the same category for her role in 1974 film, Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, which Dern recalled fondly in an interview with Vanity Fair

“I remember it being scary and overwhelming,” she said.

“I also remember my mom feeling proud of herself and loving her work … and I remember thinking, ‘Whatever I do when I grow up, I want to really love my job and feel proud of it.’ I’ve never forgotten that.”

Earlier in the day, comedian Mindy Kaling spoke to Entertainment Tonight about setting up Dern with fellow Best Supporting Actor winner, Brad Pitt.

During the interview, Kaling discussed a tweet she had written with ET hosts Sharon Osborne and Kevin Frazier, where she wrote: “If Laura Dern and Brad Pitt win best supporting actor I think they should have to go on a date too.”

“Sometimes you just tweet things and you don’t know that they’re going to have that impact,” she told the ET hosts, before adding: “If Laura Dern and Brad Pitt win best supporting actor I think they should have to go on a date too.”

Kaling went on to say that “they’re both gorgeous, blonde, they’re funny” and that “they’re age-appropriate.”

“I feel like they’re both going to win. If it should move them just to kiss on stage, that would make me, and a lot of other people happy.”

“I’m rooting for it.” Ha!

The 2020 Oscars are taking place February 9 (February 10 in Australia) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
