Pop icon Madonna has been in charge of her own destiny since her debut single, Everybody in 1982, so it’s no wonder that she is ready to take on her own biopic.
In an unprecedented move, the 62-year-old will direct a film about her own life and career with co-writer Oscar winner, Diablo Cody (Juno).
“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer — a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” Madonna said in a statement.
“The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
The project is exciting for two reasons. The first of course being that it’s a tale about one of the most famous superstars in the world and secondly, it will be a no-holds-barred look from her point of view.
Generally, a biopic is created by a completely different team and often, the real person or people only have a peripheral view and a small amount of input in the way their story is adapted, so it will be really interesting to see how this plays out.
Madonna has been in the spotlight for five decades (can you believe it?!) and has had a stellar music career alongside countless reinventions.
She’s also starred in and made films and was at the height of her fame in the 1980s and 90s.
There’s no news on the casting of the film as yet, however, the film will be made by Universal Pictures.
Donna Langley, filmed entertainment group chair at Universal said that Madonna was “the ultimate icon, humanitarian, artist and rebel.”
“With her singular gift of creating art that is as accessible as it is boundary-pushing, she has shaped our culture in a way very few others have,” she said.
