Allergies can, unfortunately, flare-up at any time during the year. In winter, allergies can often be exacerbated because we’re spending most of our time indoors and being exposed to allergens like dust mites, moulds and devastatingly, our pets.

While in spring and summer, your allergies can be triggered by pollen and certain grasses. Ever had an allergy flare-up after mowing the lawn? That’s an all-too-common experience in the warmer seasons.

Using an air purifier is a great way to help prevent these annoying symptoms. Air purifiers work by sucking in the air, circulating it through a filter and depositing it back out with the aim to remove allergens and microparticles that could be causing you to sneeze, cough and experience itchy eyes. According to Healthline, these devices can remove pollen, dust mites, mould particles, toxins and smoke from the air.

While there are many different air purifiers on the market (varying greatly in price), Kmart stocks a line of affordable air purifiers that cater for small, medium and large rooms — so you can buy one for your bedroom, lounge room or home office.

All of the Kmart air purifiers have a HEPA filtration system, which stands for high-efficiency particulate air. According to CHOICE, a HEPA filter effectively “traps very small particles, invisible to the naked eye. Generally, HEPA filters can trap at least 99.95% of dust, smoke, mould and other particles in the air, down to a tiny 0.3 microns in size.”

For a compact space like a home office, Kmart’s Small Tower Purifier for $49 is your best bet. It includes a HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter. According to CHOICE, carbon filters are great for trapping odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are “a group of carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature” and can be found in many household cleaning products.

For a slightly larger area like your bedroom, the Medium Tower Air Purifier is a perfect size. As well as the HEPA filter, this purifier comes with sleep mode, a timer and child lock as well as a filter changing reminder. This one will set you back $99.
