On the anniversary of rapper Juice WRLD’s death, his girlfriend shared a tribute for her late partner on her social media accounts.
Ally Lotti says that her grief has not lessened in the twelve months since the 21-year-old music star passed away from an accidental drug overdose and that she remembers their last conversation like it was yesterday.
“If if it wasn’t for your love I wouldn’t have ever even made it this far,” she continued. “I kno you’re here w me endlessly… not a sec goes I don’t wish for atleast one more second longer w you (sic).”
Ally was an unfortunate bystander as Juice WRLD — real name Jarad Anthony Higgins — died at the Chicago Midway Airport on December 8, 2019.
It was a tragic end for one of rap’s most promising stars, whose career had yet to reach the heights many believed he could achieve.
Juice had rapped frequently about his struggles with substance abuse and told the New York Times in 2018 that he was trying to get a handle on his use of Xanax.
“I smoke weed, and every now and then I slip up and do something that’s poor judgment,” he said. “I have a lot going for me, I recognize it’s a lot of big things, a lot of big looks. I want to be there, and you don’t have to overdose to not be there.”
His words became eerily prophetic when attempts to revive him with Narcan were unsuccessful, a year ago today.
The official cause of his death, as reported by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, was oxycodone and codeine toxicity. Both drugs are considered opioids, which made Higgins yet another victim of the ongoing opioid crisis that has been increasingly consuming the US since the 1990s.
The rapper went into convulsions as his private plane was searched in the early hours of the morning at the Chicago airport. The search was being conducted by Federal Agents who had been tipped off to the possibility that the plane was carrying guns and drugs.
The agents met the plane at 1.00am. By 3.00am, Juice WRLD was dead.
Born in Chicago on December 2, 1988, Higgins first found notoriety on the music sharing platform SoundCloud with his melodic, freestyle rapping. Commercial success came swiftly with the talented artist signing a USD $3 million deal with Interscope Records and his second album Death Race for Love debuting at number one on the Billboard album charts.
His death was met by shock and disbelief from many of his musical peers including Drake, Lil Yachty, Lil Nas X and Chance the Rapper.
To mark the anniversary of his death, rapper The Kid Laroi released a remix of his track Reminds Me of You, posthumously featuring Juice WRLD’s vocals.
Announcing the remix on his Instagram account Laroi wrote, “thank u for everything bro. without you there would be no me. I love and miss u unconditionally.” (sic)
