Nestled in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, Hayman Island is a secluded oasis that exudes luxury and relaxation. The island, at the northernmost tip of the Whitsundays, is home to the iconic InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, taking in southern views across the Coral Sea.
Since the 1950s, this small island has been a haven for travellers seeking respite from the stresses of everyday life. In recent years, the island has become a popular destination for those looking to indulge in the finer things in life, thanks to its world-class, five-star resort and stunning natural beauty.
With a rich history dating back over 9,000 years, through the use of the island by the Nagaro Indigenous people, to Captain Cook’s arrival in 1770, and the purchase of the island by Ansett, Hayman Island has become a must-visit destination for discerning travellers seeking an idyllic escape.
In addition to its resort offerings, Hayman Island is also known for its natural attractions. The island is surrounded by coral reefs, making it a popular destination for snorkelling and scuba diving. Visitors can also take part in a variety of other water-based activities, including kayaking, sailing, and fishing.
Hayman Island is accessible by boat or helicopter from the nearby town of Airlie Beach. The island has a small airport, but it is primarily used for private planes and helicopters.
In this article, we’ll delve into the accommodation options on offer and explore why the allure of this breathtaking island has made it one of the top luxury destinations in Australia.
Accommodation Hayman Island
The island is famous for being one of the most expensive and exclusive locations in the entirety of the Whitsundays.
This is the kind of place where international celebrities, including Bill Gates, Bob Geldof, Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, Mariah Carey, Chris Hemsworth, and Elton John, come to get away from it all.
In addition, there is only one resort, so there’s little chance of competition driving prices down. It is, after all, a privately-owned island.
The InterContinental Group took over the Hayman Island resort from the One&Only group in 2019, spending 2.5 years and $135 million on a refurb and redesign. The resort features 182 rooms, suites, and villas and comes complete with its own day spa, fitness centre, and outdoor pool. There are also four delicious restaurants in the resort offering modern Australian, Vietnamese, and Mediterranean dining.
Depending on the time of year you book, and how far in advance you make your booking, the cheapest you are going to get a room here is $760 per room per night, moving up to $5,400 per night for a four-bedroom Hayman Residence.
