Critics Choice Awards 2020 Winners: The Complete List

Kristen Bell

Awards season is officially underway with the second of its major ceremonies, the Critics Choice Awards, taking place in Los Angeles on January 13.

Australian actor Toni Collette walked away with Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television for her role as Detective Grace Rasmussen in Unbelievable.

And while both Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman were also nominated — with Robbie, a nom for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Bombshell, and Kidman, for Best Actress in a Drama Series for Big Little Lies — unfortunately, neither women took home a statue, losing out to Laura Dern and Regina King, respectively.

Joaquin Phoenix — who already took out Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama at the Golden Globes, was victor once again at the CCA’s for his titular role in Joker.

Phoenix, who has chosen to wear the same tux for the duration of the awards season, thanked his, mum Arlyn for being his “greatest inspiration” over the years, saying that she “never gave up” and “always believed” in him – even when he may not have believed in himself.

Director Quentin Tarantino took home the Best Original Screenplay award for his film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with the film itself, winning Best Picture.

Frozen actor, Kristen Bell, won the #SeeHer award, which “recognises a woman who embodies the values set forth by the SeeHer movement, to push boundaries on changing stereotypes and acknowledge the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape.”

Accepting the award from her The Good Place co-star Ted Danson, Bell gave an emotional speech about what it means to be a woman.

“Sometimes I do get asked, What does it mean to be a woman today? And I respond always by asking them to repeat the question so I can buy more time because it’s a really, really hard question,” the 39-year-old said.

“It is just about giving yourself permission to be the things that you really are, which seems very easy but it is not because women have been conditioned to fit into boxes.”

Later, comedian and actor Eddie Murphy was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award.
