The Final Season of ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Is Here and Here’s How You Can Watch It

Brooklyn Nine Nine

Attention squad,

It has come to my attention that the best precinct on television will conclude its journey imminently.

Please remain vigilant as I distil further information in the coming days.

Regards, Captain Raymond Holt.

Okay, so Captain Holt didn’t actually say that but it’s how we imagine he would deliver the news that beloved police sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine has set its final season premiere date.

The eighth and last season of the Mike Schur and Dan Goor-created comedy will air on NBC in the US starting August 12, 2021 — and SBS will be fast-tracking the season so that Australian audiences will be able to watch from Friday, August 13.

New episodes will drop weekly and will be available both on the channel and on SBS on Demand.

Saturday Night Live alum Andy Samberg leads the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, starring as Detective Jake Peralta who is quite brilliant but also hilariously immature. In the final season, Jake and the squad must try to balance their personal lives and their professional lives over the course of a very difficult year.

Andre Braugher, Melissa Fumero, Terry Crews, Joe Lo Truglio, Stephanie Beatriz, Joel McKinnon Miller and Dirk Blocker also star.

The award-winning series originally ran for five seasons on the Fox network in the US before being cancelled, but NBC picked up the show for a sixth season that aired in 2019.

The hilarious sitcom won a Golden Globe for best comedy series in its first year, with Samberg also taking home the trophy for lead actor in a comedy. Meanwhile, Braugher picked up an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Captain Holt who, along with Beatriz’s Rosa, provides representation for the LGBTQIA community.

In 2020, Brooklyn Nine-Nine faced a significant hurdle after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer, shone a disturbing spotlight on the policing practices of the US and the deeply ingrained issues of systemic racism and brutality.

In fact, several planned episodes were scrapped entirely after the murder of George Floyd in May 2020.

In a teaser trailer released for the final season, the cast explains what it has meant to them, while various clips take us on a trip down memory lane. The trailer also provides a tally for just how many sex tape jokes have been made over the course of the comedy (32) and how many times someone said “cool, cool, cool” (4297).

While nothing will make it easier to say goodbye to the world’s best precinct, we hopefully have one final heist to look forward to and, for the love of God, Gina (Chelsea Peretti) better make one last appearance.

In the meantime, we’ll just be over here crying and wondering why the best things in life never last long enough (title of our sex tape).

Seasons 1-7 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are now available to watch on Netflix and the final season will premiere on SBS and SBS on Demand on August 13, 2021.
