The mullet is arguably one of the most iconic hairstyles in the world. While this particular hairdo reigned supreme in the ’80s, it’s now making a comeback in 2020.

Black Dog Institute, the not-for-profit mental health medical research organisation, wants you to shape and grow a mullet this September. And, it’s all in the name of raising much-needed funds for mental health research.

Mullets For Mental Health is an initiative that the Black Dog Institute hopes will help drive real change through ground-breaking research into early detection, prevention and treatment of common mental health disorders.

According to the Black Dog Institute, 60% of Australians who report symptoms of mental illness don’t seek help and suicide is the leading cause of death among Aussies aged 15 to 44.

To help change these statistics and raise money for the organisation, all you have to do is register to create your mullet fundraising page. Share it with your friends and family and ask them to donate what they can to mental health research.

Then, on September 1, you can get out the scissors (or head to the hairdresser — your choice!) and shape your locks into the iconic mullet style. If you’re lacking inspiration, think of the mullets rocked by Billy Ray Cyrus, Andre Agassi, Joan Jett and even Miley Cyrus, who is currently sporting the hairstyle.
