If you’re one of the many, many, many people who got swept up in Squid Game mania, you’re not alone. In fact, you’re also part of the inspiration behind Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk‘s next show, The Best Show on the Planet.
Alongside his plans for Squid Game season two, Hwang has announced that he is currently developing an entirely new series, a satire called The Best Show on the Planet, which is based on the unparalleled success of Squid Game.
Squid Game launched in September 2021, and quickly surpassed Bridgerton as Netflix’s most successful series to date, becoming the number one show in 90 countries. It’s estimated that within the first four weeks after the series launched, Netflix users streamed 1.65 billion hours of Squid Game.
In a new interview with Deadline, however, Hwang revealed that as he works on bringing season two of Squid Game to life, he’ll also be working on a new series, called The Best Show on the Planet.
The new show will be a satire based on the immense popularity of Squid Game, but is still in its earliest planning stages, so details are pretty scant. However, given how integral the social commentary on capitalism and meritocracy is to Squid Game, it’s reasonable to expect that The Best Show on the Planet will take aim at fandom and consumerism.
As for Squid Game season two, it’s still awhile away — think Halloween 2024 — with Hwang telling Vanity Fair recently that he has about three pages of ideas which will be fleshed out into the second season.
Of the plot, he teased: “Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again. I want to ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?’”
Although there’s no confirmed streaming platform for The Best Show on the Planet just yet, it’s very likely it will appear on Netflix at some point in the next few years.
