As much as I love certain books, I can’t remember when I’ve ever read one twice. To avoid them collecting dust and taking up valuable space in my tiny apartment, I’m constantly giving them away to friends or putting them on my neighbourhood’s community bookshelf. With some books costing upwards of $35, reading then becomes an expensive habit.
Enter the e-reader. They’re ideal for readers who enjoy the print-like reading experience but don’t want to be stuck with a stack of expensive books. And considering the first e-reader was unveiled in 2004, they’ve had plenty of time to advance in their tech. These days, many e-readers have glare-free displays and extra-long battery life and are compact in size.
One of the most popular e-readers on the market right now — judging by the reviews on Amazon — is the Amazon Kindle (2024 release) in matcha colour. And on Black Friday, it’s 16% off, so from $199 to $167. The Kindle gives you up to six weeks of battery life from a single charge and allows for 16GB of storage so it can store thousands of books.
It also has a glare-flare display, adjustable front light and a dark mode. The Kindle was also designed sustainably, using 75% recycled plastic, 90% recycled magnesium and 99% wood fibre-based materials. Plus, using a Kindle instead of buying a book is more sustainably anyway.
If you’re not keen on the matcha colour, it comes in black too. Or if you’re not keen on the size (it’s 10.86cm wide and 15.78mm tall), here are some other e-reader options for you.
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, $247, was $299
This model is the fastest Kindle to-date. It’s slightly bigger than the matcha-coloured model at 127.6cm wide and 17.67cm tall. It also has ‘paperwhite’ display tech, which really makes it feel like you’re reading a book.
E-Book Reader With Protective Case, $143.34
This e-reader comes with a protective case that you can fold over the screen to avoid scratches. It has 8GB of storage and is 17cm wide and 26cm tall.
Kobo Clara Colour E-Reader, $258.09
You can easily highlight sentences and passages of your book in your choice of several colours with this e-reader. It’s waterproof and made in parts with recycled plastic. The e-reader is 11.16cm wide and 15.9 tall.
